This week's Essential New Tune is very much a weapon. This guy has really become prolific over the last 12 months in terms of music releases, not only with his debut solo album but with loads of one-off tracks as well for different labels. This is coming on Play It Say It, it's out next Friday, it is Star from Nic Fanciulli, this time teaming up with his brother Mark Fanciulli.

  • In the US, the Senate has unanimously passed the Music Modernization Act. (Billboard) The bill will now head back to the House, where its changes will need approval, but it sets in motion an overhaul of music licensing legislation over a number of areas.

  • Mid-year global streaming figures showed that subscriber figures jumped 38% in the first half of 2018 to 229.5m. (Midia) The research described growth as “strong but sustained, rather than strongly accelerating”. Spotify maintained its lead with 83m subscribers, a 38% global market share. It had the greatest amount of new subscribers, with 11.9% new arrivals, 39% of all new payers. However, Apple Music is slowly closing in, adding two points to 19% of the global market.
